Search engines

What is a search engine?

A search engine is a web site offering an indexed database of Internet sites it has found that match criteria you enter.

They run programs called "spiders" or "robots" that continuously search the Internet, cataloging sites they find by content and key words. When you enter a group of search words, the engine looks through its database and lists any matches.

Each engine has its own ways of building the search criteria. Most use "AND" and "OR" logic for more specific searching. It's a good idea to check out the parts of the sites that explain these features.  And, you'll want to keep these concepts in mind when using them. Entering too general a set of search keys can return hundreds of thousands of "hits"! And, a typo here or there and you could find some sites you may not want.

If you have an "always-on" (DSL) Internet connection and Windows XP, you can set your system to automatically update to the correct time. for instructions.
