They still don’t have an edge rusher after passing on Josh Allen to draft yet another interior lineman in Quinnen Williams. The secondary looks better with free agent pick-up Adrian Amos and first-round pick Darnell Savage starting at safety. The DVOA system is explained here.
If Matt Patricia can get anything out of the secondary, the Lions will have a playoff-caliber defense.Panthers GM Marty Hurney deserves a lot of credit for the work he did this past offseason. Most NFL teams don’t have an elite pass rusher. Dallas’ safety situation remains a concern but Kris Richard and Rod Marinelli did a fantastic job scheming around it last season.The Titans don’t have any clear weaknesses on defense, but there aren’t any obvious strengths either.

If Oakland is hoping LB Vontaze Burfict will solidify the second level of the defense, I have bad news. The best cornerback on the team is 35-year-old Jonathan Joseph, though.If depth wasn’t so important, the Saints would be a lot higher on this list.
SS Malcolm Jenkins can match up with tight ends but teams with talented receivers could give the Eagles defense a lot of trouble. Mosely, but the rest of this defense remains largely the same. The secondary is solid at every spot and there’s a lot of depth at cornerback, which is led by William Jackson. The secondary isn’t far behind. He should be an improvement over Kwon Alexander but may need a year or two of development before he becomes a true difference-maker. This will be an important (…)If defenses truly win championships, the teams at the top of the list should have memorable 2019 seasons. The pass rush is a monster with ends Myles Garrett and Olivier Vernon flying off the edge and tackles Sheldon Richardson and Larry Ogunjobi clogging up the middle. There isn’t a lot of depth here, so injury luck will be pivotal.Having lost stalwarts Terrell Suggs, C.J. Then they’ll need DE Marcus Davenport to continue to develop after an impressive rookie season. The secondary exceeded all expectations a season ago and could be even better after adding second-round pick Rock Ya-Sin to the cornerback group. The defensive line has potential if Carl Lawson puts it all together for an entire season. Rookie LB Devin Bush is a capable replacement for Ryan Shazier and he’ll join free agent Mark Barron to form one of the fastest linebacker duos in the league. DE Frank Clark, who comes over from Seattle, may be better than both of those guys, but where else will the Chiefs get pressure off the edge?
The linebackers — particularly Benardrick McKinney — are very good, second-year safety Justin Reid looks like a budding star and Watt was back to being his old dominant self in 2018.
Pass rushers Von Miller and Bradley Chubb are the stars. The return of FS Rodney McLeod will give the secondary a much-needed boost. Joe Schobert leads an average linebacker group.
Losing do-it-all-safety Derwin James for the first two months of the season will make things difficult, but the secondary remains in good shape thanks to corners Casey Hayward and Desmond King.The Bills defense just keeps getting better under Sean McDermott. A bounce-back year from CB Xavier Rhodes is sorely needed, though.Vic Fangio left one talented defense for another. But outside of Watt, there isn’t a whole lot to be excited about here.

Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, Malik Jackson and Derek Barnett form a scary four-man rush, but there are a lot of unknowns lower on the depth chart. The secondary isn’t as talented as it once was but Fangio is a master of coverages and should get the best out of this group led by Chris Harris Jr. and free agent slot corner Bryce Callahan.This might be the best defense Bill Belichick has had to work with this decade. Luke Kuechly is still playing at a high level.
The cornerback group is in contention for worst in the league, though. DeForest Buckner is finally getting help on the edge with Nick Bosa and Dee Ford joining the team in the offseason. He could return late in the season and give this AFC South contender a big boost down the stretch. The Patriots ran all over a battered defense but Los Angeles will actually have linebackers available to play when the 2019 season opens. The pass rush should be improved after adding the aging (but still productive) Cameron Wake. What’s going to happen if the Bucs get off to a poor start? That’s all the Saints offense needs.The addition of Jadeveon Clowney raises the ceiling on what this defense could be in 2019. They should have no trouble getting to the quarterback. Bouye out wide locking down receivers, passing on this team will be difficult.
