Hummingbirds of Southeast Louisiana

Breeding Populations
"Winter" Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds of Southeast Louisiana, are really two groups: Those that breed here (and elsewhere in the Eastern US) and those that breed in the Pacific Northwest or Mexico and spend their winters with us.

Our Breeding Populations
Only Ruby-throated hummingbirds breed in this area. They migrate north from Mexico and Central America in the spring and return in the fall. These are the native hummingbirds east of the Rockies.

By the way, I have frequently needed various pieces of hardware fabricated.

Tim Fontan and his crew at Steve's Ace Hardware in Covington have consistently solved these problems in amazing and inexpensive ways and continue to redefine what a Helpful Hardware Man can be!

They're located just south of Covington proper at Three Rivers Road. I strongly recommend them.

Our “Winter” Hummingbirds
Like Miami in January, we are the winter resort for several hummingbird species that breed in the cold high altitudes of the western Rockies or the Mexican Sierra Madre's and then -- for reasons we don't really understand -- zip over to our neighborhoods for the winter.
